So what's the difference between coaching and mentoring?
Coaching- Focuses on both organisational and individual goals and addresses workplace performance
- Uses questions and feedback to facilitate the coachee’s thinking and practical learning
- Personal issues may be discussed but the emphasis is the impact of them on their work performance
- Impartial, focussed on improvement in behaviour
Mentoring
- A process to support and help develop knowledge, skills, thinking and behaviours
- Focuses on the person, their career and support for individual growth and maturity
- Passing on personal experience
- Provides guidance, advice, recommendations, experience, knowledge and wisdom. The mentee can choose what they do
- A relationship for encouragement, advice, and befriending. Biased in favour of the mentee
